Scary Monsters

When you’re little, night time is scary because there are monsters hiding right under the bed. When you get older, the monsters are different – self-doubt loneliness, regret – and though you may be older and wiser, you still find yourself scared of the dark.” Meredith Grey from Grey’s Anatomy

A great metaphor to highlight those feelings we can have of depression, anxiety which diminishes our self-belief.

Many things can trigger fears within us, and these fears can appear as scary monsters, feeling real, particularly when we feel disempowered or unwell.

Often, we can’t pinpoint what’s wrong, we only know that something isn’t right – we want our ‘mojo’ back.

There are more people than we think suffering from scary monsters. If it’s something we have experienced before, and I have, we can recognise the symptoms and hopefully seek help to help us get through the bad times. If it’s the first time you are experiencing this then at first you might not realise you are depressed, or that there is a route cause for your suffering from repeated illnesses. These are often tell-tale signs our body is telling us to act.

Stress is one of the biggest causes of illness in the workplace. We often think of stress as being an illness, but it’s a symptom, not the cause. We need to look deeper to determine the cause.

Stress has three levels, mental, emotional and physical, and it’s only when we have physical problems we do something about it; the GP metaphorically puts a ‘plaster on the wound’ without finding out what is happening underneath. If not dealt with, it festers and becomes septic.

What can we do?

  1. We need to listen to our bodies before we get to the physical stage
  2. Seek help and talk to someone to help us get through – this isn’t the sign of a weak person but a sensible and strong person
  3. Remember, you are not the only person going through this nor the first person to go through this
  4. SO, fight the scary monsters and don’t be ‘scared of the dark’ anymore
