Sometimes we just need to take time out or off, don’t we?

All sorts of things can create stress, worry, anxiety with the challenges we all have in our lives today. There is so much for us to manage at any given time and it can become just too much.

Instead of battling on and reaching burnout we should consider taking a break, taking time out or off, but various things can prevent us from doing so, amongst of course not wanting to let others down, ourselves down and feeling that we are a failure.

Even if we do decide that taking time off or out is the sensible and most logical thing to do, we then have the guilt to deal with. Whilst you are taking your break, sabbatical or hiatus you have time to ponder and think which is when the guilt starts, doubt creeps in and then what happens? We can’t enjoy or benefit from the time out or off.

So how do we deal with the feeling of guilt if we do take time off our out, whether it’s from work, career, or business?

Below are four great tips on how not to feel guilty taking time out or time off from work, career, or business and relaxing.

Recognise the Importance of Rest: Understand that taking time for yourself is not a sign of laziness or lack of dedication. It is a fundamental aspect of maintaining overall well-being, enhancing productivity, and preventing burnout. Acknowledge that relaxation contributes to your long-term success.

Set Boundaries and Prioritise Self-Care: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal time. Prioritise self-care activities and treat them with the same importance as work-related tasks. This proactive approach helps prevent guilt by integrating relaxation into your routine as a non-negotiable part of your well-being.

Plan and Communicate: Plan your breaks and time off in advance, if possible. Communicate with colleagues, clients, or stakeholders about your absence, ensuring that expectations are managed. Clear communication reduces guilt and allows you to relax without constantly worrying about work-related issues.

Reflect on the Benefits: Take a moment to reflect on the positive outcomes of taking breaks. Whether it’s improved focus, increased creativity, or enhanced overall mental health, recognising the benefits reinforces the value of relaxation. This mindset shift can help alleviate guilt associated with taking time for yourself.

Remember that downtime is crucial for maintaining a sustainable and fulfilling career or business. Embracing a balanced approach to work and relaxation is not only healthy for you but also contributes to long-term success and satisfaction in your professional endeavours.
