Welcome to this month’s First Wednesday Wake-Up!
This month, we’re diving into a topic that truly sets the tone for success – The Five Cs of Discipline: Clarity, Commitment, Consistency, Control, and Compassion.
Discipline often gets a bad rap, but it’s not about restriction or perfection — it’s about direction and purpose. When you’re clear on what matters, committed to your goals, consistent in your actions, in control of your choices, and kind to yourself along the way, you create space for genuine progress — not just endless “busyness.”
So, take a moment this morning to reflect: are you being productive, or just busy? Remember, as Socrates wisely said, “Beware the barrenness of a busy life.”
Here’s to starting the month with focus, balance, and a dash of self-compassion — because true discipline isn’t about doing more; it’s about doing what truly counts.
The Five Cs of Discipline
by Debs Success Factor
In a world that glorifies being ‘busy’, true discipline isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing what truly matters. Discipline is the quiet power that turns intentions into action and dreams into daily habits. I call it The Five Cs of Discipline: Clarity, Commitment, Consistency, Control, and Compassion.
1. Clarity
Without clarity, your energy gets scattered. Clarity means knowing what you want, why you want it, and how it fits into your bigger purpose. When you define your goals with precision, your path becomes simpler. You stop chasing every shiny distraction and start moving with intention.
2. Commitment
Commitment is the decision that you’ll keep going — even when the spark fades. It’s easy to show up when things are exciting; real discipline begins when it’s not. Commitment is the promise you make to yourself that says, “I’m all in,” regardless of how I feel today.
3. Consistency
Consistency is where results are built. Progress doesn’t come from grand gestures but from small, repeated actions. Whether it’s exercising, writing, or leading, consistency compounds. It’s the steady rhythm that separates wishful thinking from genuine transformation.
4. Control
Control isn’t about rigidity – it’s about focus. It’s the ability to manage your impulses, attention, and time. In a world full of distractions, self-control keeps you aligned with your priorities. When you control your reactions instead of letting circumstances control you, you reclaim your power.
5. Compassion
True discipline includes compassion. You won’t always get it right, and that’s okay. Compassion allows you to reset without criticism and grow without burnout. It’s the gentleness that sustains the drive to keep improving.
In summary:
When you practice the Five Cs — Clarity, Commitment, Consistency, Control, and Compassion – you build a strong foundation for purposeful living. But beware of mistaking discipline for relentless busyness. Being “addicted to busyness” can feel productive but often keeps you from what really matters.
As Socrates said, “Beware the barrenness of a busy life.”
True discipline isn’t about doing more – it’s about doing what counts.
Action Step:
This week, choose one of the Five Cs to focus on — maybe it’s gaining clarity around a goal, tightening your consistency, or showing yourself more compassion when things don’t go to plan. Small, intentional steps in one area often strengthen them all. Discipline isn’t built overnight; it’s shaped by the choices you make today — so start with one and build from there.
